Soloing: Creating melodies that connect and make sense across several chords and scales is a skill that you need to master if you want to be able to make solos that keep the listeners attention and are experienced as musical. In this lesson I am going to have a look at an important tool in achieving this skill: motifs.

Australia’s Triple J radio station managed to gather some of the biggest names in music for their new comedy sketch, including Lorde, Disclosure, Skrillex, Diplo and more! In the video, the station’s weekday breakfast DJs Matt and Alex cram all of the artists in their studio so they can record a theme song for the annual music countdown. Of course it doesn’t work, as egos begin to collide!
Tensions and cheesy jokes rise as even more cameos come pouring into the studio (Steve Aoki, Rick Astley, Flume, Ben Folds, etc.). But fortunately, Gotye comes in right on time and saves the day with his ukulele! The promotional video was created in anticipation of Triple J’s forthcoming year-end Hottest 100 countdown.
Watch up top.

They are known for their energetic music, wild cosplay-like outfits, and live shows full of energy and on stage antics. Their music is very eclectic and has many different elements from genres such as punk, pop, metal, hip-hop and electronica in their sound and thus cannot be properly labeled. Some songs tend to not mix all these sounds together and focus on one or two, while other song combine all these elements. There are two singers, Angel Taka (lead) and Masato, whereas for the most part Angel sings in more of a pop friendly voice …
I always wanted to do one of these split-screen videos, so why not with my favorite band? To be clear these are the songs that solidified my love for Dream Theater, so they’re very dear to me. I took great care not to screw it up too badly. Enjoy! * The audio was recorded separately from the video and “properly” mixed, but the video is from the actual recording sessions. Pretty much everything was done in one take (give or take a few punch-ins, please forgive me for being human ;]) * I did the keyboard solos in Overture on the guitar. I was going to try to bang them out on the keyboard, but they were too fakkin hard :/ * I recorded my parts over the backing tracks found at www.guitarbackingtrack.com so I wasn’t able to fine-tune the mix 100% * For the record, the guitar was in-tune when I started recording! * The video was recorded on a Galaxy Nexus and cut together with Adobe Premiere * The guitars were recorded direct in with the Fractal Axe-FX and mixed with the vocals and backing tracks with Presonus Studio One

I was pleasantly suprised at how absoultely mind blowing the game was and how masterfully the music was done. This was so much fun to cover, especially the switch to the jazz part. It’s been a while since I’ve played with that style. I’m hope you guys enjoy this amazing theme from an amazing game!
